Mega Eternia Tower- Attak Trak and Mini Figures. SpartanNerd review

The Eternia Towers. As a child I only dreamed of this set. I knew of it from the toy catalogue in 1987? and also from the mini-comics. (Here is a picture below.). In person I have only seen this toy one time, at the Toy Federation in Greer, SC. And it is truly a marvel. HUGE! Which is why the size of this set is a little bit of a downer.

Now I am NOT building the tower yet. I figure I would wait until I got all three pieces. Surely Grayskull Tower and Viper Tower will come out before Christmas this year. Just up front, this set looks to be smaller than the vintage set was.

Instead I was super excited that we finally got the Attak Trak! I don’t have much of a nostalgia connection to the tower. But the Attak Trak, now we are talking! I might have skipped this set if it weren’t for that specific vehicle.

But first, the packaging. This is one of the best boxes in awhile. (Pictured at the top). It features the Eternia Tower prominently, and shows off the mini figures with an illustrated vibe. You also can see the Attak Trak. Important…it also shows paintings of Grayskull Tower and Viper Tower, as well as Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain. Eternia Tower is supposed to be a place of balance between good and evil. (I think this is the original lore anyway.). I heard sometime awhile back that the intention was to create a Grayskull 2.0. This set was to feature a piece of Grayskull and Snake Mountain, both of which were out of production but demand was expected to go up with the movie and all in 1987. The Eternia Tower story was to launch off new property, He-Ro and the Masters of Preternia, or something like that.

The sides and the back of the box are terrific, featuring retro blueprint types of designs in red. I can’t express how great I thought this was! And this box is much smaller than Grayskulls or Snake Mountains. Of course, this set is alot less pieces though.

Now for the figures.

We got Battle Armor He-Man. This is the same as the one we got before (I am going to show comparisons on all of the duplicates.). The only difference is this armor has the one scratch on it.

We got Webstor. This is the same Webstor from Snake Mountain, but with a darker color scheme (hard to tell in the photo) and also a larger lazer.

I couldn’t help but do an Erle Norem reference. We get Buzz Off. I prefer Buzz Off without the helmet. It seems I lost it when I was a kid, and kind of forgot about it until I was an adult. But he came with it, and his little axe also. This is the first Buzz Off we have had, and so Clawful and Whiplash couldn’t be too far behind soon… (They use the same chest piece and monster legs.)

And finally, Ninjor. This guy is a walking weapons rack! He comes with a bow and arrow, a katana, and nunchuks. Admittedly, this character wasn’t one I had as a kid. I have expressed that I had about 80% of Masters of the Universe stuff as a child. But Ninjor just wasn’t one of them. I don’t know much about the character either. I remember Jitsu quite well, and am surprised that we haven’t seen him yet to balance out Fisto.

I went ahead and built the weapons rack/computer system.

We have been given so many different weapon racks. But this one is different. the computer on one side…I just am not familiar enough with the Eternia Tower set to know if this was part of the original toy. I like how the graphics on there show the three towers. I almost think of it as a charging station for the Attak Trak. The weapons are in bright orange, and frankly I don’t really like that.

All of this is pretty consistent. On to the Attak Trak!

As a child, this was my FAVORITE vehicle. It ate the C batteries…that was the problem. But I loved it from the cartoon (which was more of a big talking van) and I loved the toy with the awesome treads to run stuff over.

Those blue things on the side were always a puzzle to me. Were they supposed to be guns? I never could tell, and really almost can’t tell now. It has a rocket design on it, so maybe a missle launcher?

They included nice vintage printed blocks to go where the stickers would be, just like they did with the Battle Ram.

On the vintage toy, figures could grab the handle basically with the same design as the battle ram. Here we don’t get that option. It just has some studs that stick off to the side and nothing for the figures to grab. The wheels work exactly like the vintage toy. Which is super fantastic. You have to push it yourself, of course. But it is a genius design.

In Masters of the Universe Classics, we got a few vehicles. Roton, Battle Ram, Wind Raider. But they skipped the Attak Trak. And that was actually truly shameful. I don’t even think we have had any Attak Trak re-dos or analogues since the 1980s. I don’t own a single Masters of the Universe Origins figure. But if they come out with a new Attak Trak, I bet I am the first to get it!

Here is a bug theme setup, Buzz Off vs. Monstroid.

Well, I rate the Attak Trak a solid 5/5. I think it is weak to give us another Battle Armor He-Man and another Webstor. Ninjor is cool, but doesn’t really belong in my head. Buzz off is terrific.

They need to give us more mini figures. You all know what. I really want. It is that Battle for Eternia II set. But no one has it. So….

Mega Masters of the Universe SDCC By The Power of Grayskull set

I stayed on the fence about this one. Eventually I ordered it before Christmas 2022, with the intention of building it when it snowed. (It never snowed, so…)

On May 15, 2023 I decided to get to it.

The box is flashy, with this half pink and half yellow sword and lightning all over it. It glows in the dark! so this is just perfect for a set called “By The Power of Grayskull.” Besides this, the box is foil underneath with a rock design. This package is designed to never be parted from the set, so this is extra important. (The box becomes a diorama)

Here is the back of the box. Just the name of the set and more lightning, and the “regal, legal palaver.”

Here is the open box. You get a nice backdrop of a castle. Of course it is Castle Grayskull, without the skull. The skull face and minifigures is all this set really is. The instruction manual is is a little pocket on the back of the box. you can see it at the top with the lightning bolts. The instructions are a nice little book that just didn’t want to stay open easily while I built the set. That tray on the front is the underpinning of the main set, and also serves as a nice little tray for minifigures, weapons, whatever within reason. It also has a nice “ground” painting to add to taking good photos, which is exactly what I did below.

The set came as expected, in lots of smaller baggies. I went straight to the minifigures first, of course.

I am going to just show pics and then comment after the pictures..

Well, at least the sword glows in the dark.

The designers at Mattel were thinking they were giving us figures that are stylized like the animation on the Masters of the Universe: Revelation cartoon. The animation on that show is beautiful, I would say the most beautiful we have had in a MOTU cartoon. I didn’t like everything about it, for instance the “manning up” of Teela and Evil Lynn. And I surely didn’t care much for especially the first five episodes and then Kevin Smith’s “We killed He-Man twice!” commentary. But for the most part, the animation was terrific. One feature of the style was these “shadows” or “cell shading” I have heard it called. And this is what they are trying to recreate with these figures. But instead it appears as a muddy mess. And I don’t like it at all. I mean, look at it. “Diarrhea He-Man?” “Pee Pee Pants Adam?” To my knowledge, though, this is the only time we have seen the more modern “H” symbol instead of the iron cross on a traditional He-Man. Prince Adam isn’t as bad, but he still has a muddy face. And let me point out that these figures are not “on model” with the cartoon. They are still the classic molds with a different paint job. Prince Adam would have been an opportunity to make a more slender male to use for other figures in the future. (I have been saying and thinking this for awhile.)

Well. let’s talk about the build.

The “shield” beside the figure is the key/knob to make the mechanism work.

The idea of the set is to have the Castle Grayskull facade with a flipping door that allows Prince Adam to transform into He-Man. You plug that knob into a keyhole on the side of the set to make it work.

I want to point out that the figures are pegged in on the back, and there is very little wiggle room while they hold the sword up if you want to use the action feature.

So how does it look with other figures…for instance if you didn’t want to use these badly painted mega figures.

Much better!

This set took me about two hours to build. I had very little trouble. I must complain about the little white scars on most of the bricks…you can see them just blatantly there…you don’t have to look closely or anything. Mattel has done better and needs to return to that. (The Snake Mountain was when we first started seeing that mess.)

So what are my thoughts.

It is what it is. A Grayskull facade on stilts with two badly designed figures of characters that we already had. An action feature that could have been designed better with just a little bit more headroom for He-Man. A nice package that is meant to remain on display as a diorama for the set.

I mean, what purpose does this set fill? We already had a Castle Grayskull. We had Prince Adam and He-Man. For someone who has been a “selective completist” for this line, it kind of creates some “bulk.”

I believe I am going to have it on display in my chorus classroom.

At the beginning of the post, when I mentioned I was on the fence about purchasing this back in December. This is the reason why. I knew this bad paint job was on the figures, and I already have a Castle Grayskull.

Here is what could have been done instead.

GIVE US A BETTER SLIME PIT. The miniaturized size of this Grayskull would have been the correct scale for a proper slime pit. As an SDCC item, it could have included Hordak, Zombie He-Man, and two new members of the Evil Horde. You could make a frame across the back and attach a big skull head similar to what is on the Battle Bones. The tray at the bottom could be the pit. (The slime pit they gave us in the Skeletor head set is just sad.)

WHISPERING WOODS. Give us some She-Ra figures. The box could have been a backdrop. We could have been given a canopy and a base.

THE WELL OF DARKNESS. Make an evil compliment to Snake Mountain, and have a precipice overhanging the tray, which is a pit with a big eye looking up and some teeth to devour its sacrifice, in this case Evil-Lynn or He-Man. Include a Skeletor and a Flocked Panthor.

THE BACK WALL OF GRAYSKULL. This would have been designed to show us the walls we never get in a playset. It would have a spine, and come with some things like the little robot/space suit as a figure, or just an improved turret gun even. It might include a portal room like we saw in Filmation.

THE CRYSTAL CHAMBER. The Sorceress hangs out here. The set would look like Grayskull on the outside, or even like the thing we saw in Masters of the Universe Revelation that Skeletor opens. We would have lots of crystal pieces. Maybe even some type of throne for the Sorceress to sit on.

All five of these are ideas that the same style of diorama box could use with 400 something pieces of brick. I did feel like two mini figures was too few.

I rate this set, no way around it, 1 out of 5. It is easily the one I could have passed on. Now it awkwardly takes up space in my closet. At least the package glows in the dark. I am thinking of trying to add a motor so the mechanism can move automatically, and maybe there can be lights and sounds. This will be something I have never done before, so if anyone who reads this can offer advice on that, please do!

Mega Construx MOTU Custom War Sled

What got me started on this was this image that I took when I picked up the McFarlane toys Cy-Gor and wanted some pics. I got this one with MOTUC Man-At-Arms on the MOTUC Battle-Ram. And so I was messing with the filters in Apple Photos, and this color scheme came up. And instantly, I thought…this looks like the enemy version of the battle ram! The “War Sled.” (As opposed to “Sky Sled.)

I don’t remember how long ago this was. At some point between taking this photo (August 20, 2020) and selling off my MOTUC toys, I picked up two Battle Ram Mega Construx sets. It became my intention to make one of them “evil” in purple. After all, the set comes with a griffon head and a serpent head. They encouraged us to use our options!

Basically I just bought some purple-flake spray paint. I taped up all of the parts that have stickers and removed the wheels. And sprayed away. I had alot of success with crimson flake on the Gundam Epyon model, and I knew this was the effect I wanted.

I only recently really began to paint things. I felt like it turned out pretty good.

You can compare the original with the purple one. I couldn’t do anything with the round control panel. I thought I might use some warhammer brushes on it or something. But in the end, I decided just to take it off. It looks more evil this way in my opinion. I mean, maybe the evil warriors are driving the old model. Or maybe they want to pollute, and that thing on the good one is some kind of environmental control. Or maybe (more likely) the Battle Ram is a relic of the old world, and Man-At-Arms has improved upon the design, while the bad guys just get the clunker model. I believe that part underneath to be some kind of turbine from an earlier non-motu set.

The War Sled vs. the Jet Sled. I really need to get some flight stands.

What about the “ram” side?

How about this for an impromtu battle scene!

I am encouraged by the customizing scene for Mega Blocks. For instance, you can find all kind of mixed recipes to make characters and sets. What I mean is, people mix and match Mega Blocks, and Mega doesn’t seem to care. Lego, well, it seems like they care alot. In this case, painting a common, readily available set was cool. There is a more green version out there…I should try and make that sometime. Hey maybe I’ll make one with a long seat, like from the He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special!

Mega Construx Land Shark…SpartanNerd Review

It has been nice to get new Mega Construx! The Land Shark seems to be the flavor of the month for Mattel…they have released a new “Origins” version. (I am not collecting the Origins line). You have sharks here, Roboto, and Skeletor. How are kids not going to buy this. And also SpartanNerds…

Unfortunately, my box is a bit beat up. I was also a little unnerved at the tape on the side…it made me think someone might have stolen the figures and resealed it. (Luckily, not so.). It depicts the toys in what seems to be illustrated art. What is going on with the wheels is the question. If I remember the vintage toy, it only had cosmetic treads with functional wheels hidden on the bottom.

The sides of the box are also very nice. I keep these packages…some day I will have adequate space to properly display all of them. I do display them now, but it’s crowded.

Well, let’s get to documenting the build!

This is the instruction manual. It has the same art as the front, with less text. The back shows off two other sets. I don’t care much for that Battle Cat, and it is the only set from the Mega Construx Masters of the Universe line that I haven’t purchased. There is a Havoc Staff coming out soon in the same vein that I believe I will be skipping. I have the Monstroid, but haven’t yet built it. Stay tuned Hub City Geeks because likely by the end of the week I will have a blog entry for that one!

As with the other larger builds from this line, the pieces come in numbered baggies.

Number 1 has the mini figures…what a relief!

Let’s build Skeletor first.

The new Skeletor is exactly the same as the one that came with the Point Dread set. It is Battle Armor Skeletor. And I pondered not even opening the poly bag, but the axe and the sword were loose. But after studying the issue, I realized that this version has the scratched armor like you would get with two hits on the vintage toy. Also, this one came with the purple sword, which was a puzzling omission from the Point Dread version. Otherwise they are identical. Same colors, same face paint job. Maybe the elbows on this one are a little sharper. “monster arms?” But I think this might be my imagination.

On to ROBOTO.

I used to love robots as a kid. And ROBOTO here had something to do with that. I am a little bummed that the gears are just tampograft stickers…it seemed that when they revealed this they were looking at making the gears move, and bragging about it being “the smallest pieces ever in a Mega Bloks set.” I guess they couldn’t crack that for the price. Otherwise, this was the main reason for getting this set! Classic Roboto, with a clear body. We have a new Roboto on card…but it seems to be more 200x inspired. (See the post here)

I really enjoyed photographing Roboto. Here we can see him raising his axe to meet Skeletor’s. Notice that the gun attachment can fit in the hole in his back…making a jet pack sort of look.

On to the build!

As I said before, I have to separate all of the blocks and place them with others alike before I begin. This helps me be efficient and quick. I worked slowly, taking pictures as I went. I finished it in just over an hour.

After bag 2, it looks like we have a boat. Roboto’s other hand could come off…a new trick. You couldn’t do this with the vintage toy! These other pieces were left over.

I was a little bummed that the teeth were in large pre-fab pieces. But I was also psyched that there are real rubber treads!

And here is step 23! We get to put the treads on. And the first thing I did was roll it and marvel at how cool it is to have real treads on the Mega Construx Land Shark! The little hook spinning around was a mystery though…I hadn’t seen any string or anything like that. A definite improvement on the original design. (You can see pics and the patent diagrams for the original toy on the BattleRam Blog.)

Here it is with the chomping mouth open. So, here’s how it works! When you push the tank, the little hook spins around. At the back of the shark’s throat there is a smooth dome…the hook bumps against the smooth piece which causes the jaws to snap! I shouted for joy when I saw this happen, and took it to the SpartanWife to show off. But what color is this? She says it’s fucia. The kid says it is light purple. Notice Roboto here doing a Terminator pose! Also, notice the growing collection of leftover parts.

We arrive at poly bag number 4, and Skeletor has Luke Skywalker’ed Roboto! These pieces are all silver, and will surely be the guns.

What a relief…right!

Here is the Land Shark compared to other vehicles.

You can see the scale is very similar. It makes me wonder how they might do Stridor and Night Stalker. Would they be more of the size of Panthor (pictured above) or more the size of the Land Shark?

I feel that this version of the Land Shark stands a head taller than its predecessors. (And besides the Hot Wheels one, this is the smallest!) It has working treads, and the mouth snaps with an ingenious design. The only thing I don’t like about the build is the holes in the top of the profile above the sticker eyes. I do wish we got a toy accurate Trap Jaw instead of Battle Armor Skeletor…I feel like Trap Jaw goes better with this vehicle, with the snapping jaw action. (We don’t have Trap Jaw in toy colors either.)
